The Steepest Fall This Cycle: Mineral fuels and oils
The mirror is loud this cycle, and the loudest voice belongs to mineral fuels and oils. Across all 27 EU reporters, HS27 exports fell €339.5B year-over-year, a move of -14.7% between 2024 and 2025. Imports of the same basket fell further still, €589.3B, or -13.8%. Two numbers, one direction. The category that once anchored the trade table is quietly stepping off its pedestal.
Sitting at the bar tonight, I keep returning to the asymmetry. Imports fell in absolute euros more than exports did, even as the percentage swings ran close. That is what a de-stocking cycle looks like from orbit — the buyers pulled harder than the sellers, and the ledger tilted.
Meanwhile the counterweight glimmers on the other side of the room. Precious stones and metals — HS71 — moved the opposite way, imports rising €127.5B, a gain of +28.4%. Capital found somewhere quieter to rest while the fuel basket contracted. Not every corner of the trade mirror is receding; some corners are drawing weight in.
Zoom into the Netherlands, the continent's fuel valve, and the seasonal cadence is its own small song. HS27 exports into NL peak in Oct at index 1.138 and trough in Dec at index 0.874, averaged over 2021–2025. October pulls, December releases. A rhythm, not a rule.
August, our present month, reads index 1.015. That is baseline. The seasonal pattern offers little directional steer here — volume is neither leaning in nor leaning out. When the calendar has no opinion, the yearly shift becomes the louder signal, and the yearly shift is pointed downward.
I will not tell you a price. I will tell you what the flows suggest: with HS27 imports off -13.8% and exports off -14.7%, and August sitting at 1.015 with no seasonal lift to mask the contraction, the data leans toward softer throughput in the fuel basket for now. The mirror is describing a category in retreat. Whether the retreat continues is a question for tomorrow's ledger.
