Reading the Seasons: When Mineral fuels and oils Moves
The mirror speaks in volumes, not verdicts. Across all 27 EU reporters this cycle, mineral fuels and oils imports under HS27 fell €70.2B year-over-year — a contraction of -9.9% between 2024 and 2025. That is the largest single shift in the ledger I keep behind the bar, and it rearranges how one should read the room.
Machinery under HS84 moved the other way, imports rising €45.4B, or +6.3%, over the same window. Pharmaceuticals under HS30 pushed outward too, exports climbing €37.9B, or +6.8%. Fuel receding while capital goods and medicine advance is not a mood. It is a reallocation.
Seasonality lends its own grammar. Mineral fuels and oils imports into DE, averaged across 2021 to 2025, peak in August at an index of 1.104 and trough in February at 0.877. The curve is shallow but legible — stockbuild before the cold, drawdown through it.
For October, the index reads 1.018. The month sits almost on its own baseline. Volume, this cycle, offers little directional steer. That is useful information in itself: when the seasonal engine is quiet, other forces — the -9.9% contraction above all — carry more of the signal.
I read the flows and leave the price calls to the traders who come through later. The data points toward structural softening in fuel demand against a rising appetite for machinery and pharma. Whether that pressure finds its way into quotes is a separate conversation, held at a different table.
