Second in Line: Machinery Imports Climbs

The ledger speaks before I do tonight. Machinery under HS84 is the loudest line in the EU trade mirror this cycle — imports up €45.4B year-over-year, a move of +6.3% from 2024 to 2025 across all 27 reporters. That is not a flutter. That is a continent reordering what it buys.

Second place belongs to a subtraction. Mineral fuels and oils under HS27 fell €70.2B year-over-year, -9.9% on the same frame. Europe is pulling less energy in and pulling more capital goods in. The two lines are not strangers to each other. When fuel bills ease, machinery budgets breathe.

Pharmaceuticals under HS30 lean the other way on the export side — out the door at +€37.9B year-over-year, +6.8%. I note it for symmetry. The continent sells medicine and buys machines. A small, legible sentence inside a very large book.

Now, the seasonal cadence. German machinery imports, averaged across 2021 to 2025, peak in March at index 1.079 and trough in August at 0.912. October reads 1.054. Near baseline. The calendar is not the hand on the scale this month — the structural climb is.

I will not promise you a price. I never do. But a +6.3% annual lift in machinery imports, arriving while the seasonal index sits at 1.054 rather than at its August floor of 0.912, points toward upward pressure on landed-cost indices in the HS84 basket as the quarter closes. The flow tells us what the flow is doing. The rest, as always, waits at the bar.
