The Sharpest Climb This Cycle: Coffee, tea and spices
The ledger this cycle reads like a weather map, and one front moved faster than the rest. Across all 27 EU reporters, coffee, tea and spices under HS09 climbed €8.3B year-over-year, a +30.4% shift from 2024 to 2025. No other category in the mirror matched that velocity on a percentage basis.
Context sharpens the shape. Mineral fuels and oils under HS27 fell €70.2B, -9.9% over the same window — a far larger absolute movement, but a contraction, and one the market has been pricing for a year. Machinery under HS84 rose €45.4B, +6.3%. Those are the two heavy flywheels. HS09 is the small category spinning fastest.
A +30.4% jump in a line item this size is not a weather event. It is a structural read on supply tightness working its way through invoices — arabica and robusta harvests under stress, cocoa and vanilla margins compressed upstream, and the EU importers absorbing the delta rather than resisting it.
Seasonality tempers the next move. In DE, HS09 imports peak in November at index 1.179 and trough in February at 0.845, averaged across 2021 to 2025. October reads 1.072 — close enough to baseline that volume alone offers little directional steer this month. The flow is neither rushing nor retreating. It is simply arriving on schedule, into a market whose upstream has already repriced.
What the data points toward is upward pressure on wholesale coffee, tea and spice costs as the November index approaches 1.179 and inventories draw against a tighter origin year. That is a reading of the flows, not a price call. The ledger shows what moved. The counter at the bar shows what gets charged.
