Reading the Seasons: When Mineral fuels and oils Moves

The EU trade mirror shifted this cycle, and the loudest move was a subtraction. Across all 27 reporters, mineral fuels and oils (HS27) imports fell €70.2B year-over-year, -9.9%, 2024→2025. A number that size does not whisper. It rearranges the room.

Close behind it, machinery (HS84) imports rose €45.4B year-over-year, +6.3%. In the other direction, pharmaceuticals (HS30) exports rose €37.9B, +6.8%. Three currents, three temperaments. One continent recalibrating what it burns, what it builds, and what it sells back.

The HS27 contraction is where I keep returning. A -9.9% step down in a category this large is not a seasonal twitch. It is a structural exhale — demand softening, substitution advancing, inventories thinned, or some braid of all three. The flow has moved. The question is whether the shape of the year still holds within it.

So I check the seasonal grammar. For Belgium, HS27 imports peak in July at index 1.048 and trough in February at 0.904, averaged over 2021–2025. A modest arc, but a legible one. The barrel has a rhythm even when the levels change.

October reads 1.016. Near baseline. The month gives little directional steer on its own — the seasonal hand is neither pushing nor pulling. Which means what you see in October is closer to the underlying tide than to the tide plus the wave. The signal is less noisy here, not louder.

Taken together, the data points toward continued downward pressure on HS27 volumes relative to prior cycles, with October offering a clean read rather than a dramatic one. This is a reading of the flows, not a price call. The seasons tell you when to listen. They do not tell you what the market will say next.
